In my YouTube video this week I end up making some very strange handles… (You can find a link to the fully narrated film via the Linktree in my profile). For a long time, I’ve felt like there was some disparity between some of the mug forms I make and their handles. I focus so much on angularity and sharpness, only to attach a handle that is curvaceous and flowing. So, in this week’s video, I’m exploring new handle ideas and techniques. I can’t say I like all of what I make, but often, you learn the most through creating pots you don’t particularly feel a connection with, as it pushes you in the right direction. I pull the handles as per normal, but leave them intentionally thick, that way there’s enough material in them to carve and alter once leather hard. There’s probably a better way to go about this and I know that when I have a second and third go at creating these, they’ll be many times better, not only the craftsmanship but speed too. What a simple pleasure throwing simple mugs is. Out of all the making I do, producing a few boards of straight, cylinders like this, is perhaps one of my favourite processes in the studio. Pottery, mindfulness and meditation get chucked in together often. There is course something to be said about working with your hands and not being able to check your phone, (especially for beginners, as clay and technology don’t go hand in hand), that is therapeutic and calming. Yet, once throwing pots becomes your job, it can end up being stressful, just like anything else. There are days when throwing is the last thing I want to do. But, throwing these mugs especially, in the right moment of course, leads to making that I find blissful. My hands are occupied and my mind is intently listening to the audiobook playing in the workshop, which means that I’m not really concentrating on anything. Muscle memory takes over and the story captivates me. These are the moments on the wheel I look forward to. #madeinlondon #wheelthrownpottery #pottery #howitsmade #oddlysatisfying
