What he saw was the 2nd dimension. The universe most likely a curved space. So he was seeing other parts of his own universe from a distance. He now had the full understanding and control lf the 2nd

A 2 dimensional world could not be seen in a 3 dimension٫to us they would be seeing nothing because being 2d means being flat٫impossibly thin٫so a 2D world world not follow the rules of a 3D world.
