@earthnailsandtails: Fall is the best time to plant perennials, fruit trees, and shrubs 🌳 Imagine planting a fruit tree in the spring for the weather to quickly warm and immediately demand more resources for your plant. A tree’s root system will be small, but it will immediately begin to want to start growing new branches and leaves, and its unestablished root system simply can’t support it. And worst case scenario… you lose the tree. Doing the exact same task in the fall can yield significantly better results. As the trees grow dormant, the soil is still warm from the summer, making it the perfect environment for the roots to grow. Aim to plant your trees, shrubs and bushes about 6 to 8 weeks before your first frost. This way they aren’t focused on producing branches and leaves, but putting all the energy that is captured throughout the year into the roots to get ready for winter. When next spring and summer roll around your fruit trees will be significantly more established and be able to adapt to the transitioning conditions of spring and summer. Try it out and see the results for yourself! I'm in northern Wisconsin and have had better luck planting in the spring. Remember everyone has different soil in different areas and we have to learn what is best for your land.
