Why is this man beating his chest with a jagged stone? This is the Triptych: The Penitence of Saint Jerome, painted by the Flemish artist Joachim Patinir between 1512 and 1515. Patinir, working in Antwerp, was a pioneer in establishing landscape as an independent genre in Western art. In the center, Saint Jerome performs an act of ascetic penance. He uses that stone to strike his chest to conquer worldly temptation. Notice the crucifix on the ground and the jagged rock formation representing the harsh desert wilderness.
