There was a time when putting something on the calendar felt completely normal. Vacation next summer. Something we’d do with the girls next month. Plans for the weekend. Birthdays. School. Life. Then May 11, 2020 happened. And suddenly Tim and I knew something we had technically ALWAYS known… Plans are not promises. You can have the reservation. The money saved. The bags packed. The birthday circled on the calendar. And life can still change before you get there. That realization can really screw with you. Because once you KNOW how quickly everything can change, it’s tempting to stop looking too far ahead. Why get excited? Why make plans? Why let yourself anticipate something when you now understand exactly how much can go wrong? But there’s a cost to living that way. The future starts getting smaller. Not because something bad is actually happening… but because something bad could. And frankly, something bad always could. I hate that. But it’s REAL. We don’t get certainty. We never did. What changed was our awareness of it. So Tim and I still make plans. We still put stuff on the calendar. Not because we suddenly believe everything will work out exactly how we want. We have WAY too much evidence otherwise. We do it because uncertainty doesn’t only belong to tragedy. Tomorrow could bring something awful. It could also bring something incredible. And I’m not willing to sacrifice what’s still possible because I know what it feels like when the worst happens. That would allow one terrible day to keep taking from us YEARS later. No. Our girls died. That is real. We cannot change it. But we are still here. And as long as that’s true… there are still things worth putting on the calendar. If loss, fear, or anxiety has made your world smaller, The Emotional Pivot can help you separate what is actually happening from everything your mind is predicting might happen next. It’s free through the link in our bio. #GriefSupport #LifeAfterLoss #GrievingParents #EmotionalResilience #LifeAfterGrief
