The New Orleans streetcar system, operated by the Regional Transit Authority (RTA), is one of the most iconic public transit networks in the world. Combining National Historic Landmarks with modern transit routes, the system currently features five active lines.   History of the Streetcars Early Beginnings (1835): The system originated with the New Orleans and Carrollton Rail Road, which began as a steam-powered passenger line in 1835 before switching to mule-drawn cars. Electrification (1890s): In 1893, the system converted to electric power, prompting a massive expansion that peaked in the 1920s with over 200 miles of track.   The Bus Era Decline: Between the late 1940s and 1960s, most streetcar tracks were paved over and replaced by diesel buses. Famous routes like the Desire line (immortalized by Tennessee Williams) were converted into bus lines. Only the St. Charles line survived continuous operation.   Modern Revival: Starting in 1988 with the opening of the Riverfront line, New Orleans began restoring its historical rail network. The Canal Street line returned in 2004, followed by the Loyola–Rampart line expansion.   Current Streetcar Lines & Routes St. Charles Streetcar Line (Line 12) This line runs along St. Charles Avenue and South Carrollton Avenue through central New Orleans. Origin: Canal Street & Carondelet Street (Central Business District) Key Stops & Waypoints: • Lee Circle / Harmony Circle • St. Charles Avenue at Jackson Avenue (Garden District) • St. Charles Avenue at Washington Avenue (Lafayette Cemetery No. 1) • St. Charles Avenue at Tulane and Loyola Universities / Audubon Park • Riverbend curve onto South Carrollton Avenue Destination Terminal: South Carrollton Avenue & South Claiborne Avenue (Palmer Park) Canal – City Park / Museum Line (Line 48) This route links the riverfront to Mid-City and City Park. Origin: Canal Street & Convention Center Boulevard / Harrah's Casino Key Stops & Waypoints: • Canal Street at North Rampart Street (French Quarter border) • Canal Street at Jefferson Davis Parkway (Mid-City) • Turn right onto North Carrollton Avenue • North Carrollton Avenue at Esplanade Avenue Destination Terminal: City Park Loop at the entrance of New Orleans City Park and the New Orleans Museum of Art (NOMA) Canal – Cemeteries Line (Line 47) This route shares the central Canal Street trunk line before heading directly to the historic burial grounds. Origin: Canal Street & Convention Center Boulevard / Caesars Casino Key Stops & Waypoints: • Canal Street at Claiborne Avenue • Canal Street at Broad Street • Canal Street at North Carrollton Avenue (Line 48 junction) Destination Terminal: Cemeteries Transit Terminal at Canal Street and City Park Avenue (St. Patrick Cemetery No. 1 & Metairie Cemetery) Riverfront Line (Line 49) Running along the Mississippi River, this line connects major riverfront hubs. Origin: John Churchill Chase Street & Convention Center Boulevard Key Stops & Waypoints: • Julia Street Station • Canal Street Station (The Shops at Canal Place) • Woldenberg Park / Audubon Aquarium • Toulouse Street Station (Steamboat Natchez Dock) Destination Terminal: French Market Station at Esplanade Avenue Rampart – Loyola Line (Line 46) This line skirts the inland boundary of the Downtown area and the French Quarter.
