The narrative says that Aaron made the calf but, when asked, Aaron said that when he threw the gold into the fire, it came out as a calf. So it seems that it was God who was making this point.

There is a concept in literature and journalism called an unreliable narrator. Once you apply that concept the inconsistencies make more sense. We don’t think about the people who wrote these stories.
