Water temps in the key Niño 3.4 region have reached 3 degrees C above average (ONI), matching the record set during 2015's 'super' El Niño event. This year's event reached the record mark two months earlier than in 2015, and it's still climbing. Laguna Beach, Dana Point, and Malibu have already declared local emergencies this month after Marie eroded beaches and closed off parts of the coast.
