Thoughts on using chores as consequences? I often say with kids, it doesn’t always have to be a chore, but it’s just an easy thing to write on the BratBusters Behaviour Board. So if a child breaks a rule, there’s a consequence, and often it’s to do a chore. I don’t see it’s a problem for them to do more stuff around the house. When it comes to a consequence, it’s not meant to be a horrible punishment, more the idea of you did something bad, now it’s time to replace it with something good. And I’m sure your kids aren’t using a toothbrush and cleaning out a window sill. They could do that once, just one window sill for like five minutes, you know, an extra kind of a weird chore. I wouldn’t have them detail your car, but just something that takes maybe five minutes. Don’t get too wrapped up in the consequences, it’s just the idea that they are doing something good. Making amends. P.S. If you’re wanting to get started with calm leadership parenting, check out my BratBusters Behaviour Board that I send to my parenting newsletter, linked in my bio. When my 16 month old freaks out because she wants something, is there anything to do at the age to reinforce positive reinforcement? You just say no and let her process the fact that she just heard the word no. If they are upset at hearing no, that’s okay. Everyone’s trying to avoid the fit scenes, tantrums and meltdowns. That’s where the lessons are. Why would you avoid a lesson with your kid? Not everything can always go their way in life, and the sooner they can understand that, the better. With a 16 month old (I consider their babies up to about 15 months) you might use a bit of diversion, but not with giving them something. Just by pointing out what else is going on in the room. But don’t be afraid of the fit. That’s where the lessons are. Looking for extra guidance on parenting toddlers? All I ever get asked about on here, understandably, is about discipline. Discipline is not what I'm about. Leadership parenting is more about connecting with your kids. And their love language is fun, so you have got to play with your kids, play in their world. Let them be in charge of the fun and get silly with them. Don't expect a young child or teenager to enter your world, rather, you enter their world with respect. Not sure where to start in your calm leadership journey? Is it okay to yell at times? No, when you’re a leader, you never yell. The thing is, you don’t need to yell when you’re a leader. If I’m disciplining a kid, it’s always very calm.
