If you change the order you eat foods, so you eat a salad first, won’t that cause you to eat less at your main meal? Yes. It can. This has been studied as a “preload” effect. If you eat something before your main course, it can reduce your overall energy intake. But this isn’t really surprising. If you eat something, you will feel less hungry. So if you eat something with fewer calories than your main course, of course your calorie intake will probably be reduced a teeny bit. It’s not rocket science. That being said, it is a good reminder of something. If you focus on adding nutritious foods with a low energy density to your diet, these can naturally displace other foods out of your diet. Which, in a world full of dietary restriction and misery, can be a nice psychological shift. If you have spent years of your life focusing on what to avoid, maybe focus on what you can add instead.
