This video includes perhaps the most satisfying sequence you’ll ever see. This is how I make the pyrometric cone packs for my reduction gas firings. These colourful spikes measure heatwork, which is heat over time. In the same way a cake needs to be cooked at a certain temperature for a prolonged period, pots must be fired in the same way, allowing time for the glazes to melt and mature. These cones melt and bend forwards in sequence and I can watch them during the firing through spy-holes in the kiln’s door. Here, I’m using cones 8, 9 and 10, which covers a range of about 1250ºC to 1300ºC, and I know when my firings are done when cone 10 just flops over fully, at which point the gas is switched off and the firing can be concluded. The clay-like mixture you see me using is made in house and is simply 50% kaolin, (EPK in this case), and 50% coarse alumina hydrate. I’ve made a YouTube video that demonstrates how I mix this stuff up in great detail if you’d like to try it yourself. It’s incredibly useful stuff, although truth be told I should look for some cone firing stands, as they’re reusable, but for some reason I’ve never seen a potter in the UK use them. They obviously don’t work for soda or wood firings, as the atmospheric glazes would just smother the entire thing, but for gas it makes sense. Enjoy the snaps! I can’t tell you how many times I’ve watched those short few seconds. #pottery #pyrometriccones #satisfyingsounds #asmr
