If you’re experiencing acne, watch this reel to find out what 3 ingredients you should be using in your skincare routine. Be mindful that layering these 3 ingredients shouldn’t necessarily be done. This can cause irritation which may present as additional breakouts! Ingredient 1: Retinol If you’re not new to my page, you know retinoids are my favourite. If you’re new here, now you know. Retinoids increase cell turnover and decrease sebum production which helps with acne (it also does a whole lot more too!). If you’re in the USA, get Differin 0.1% Adapalene. (DOI: 10.1007/s13555-017-0185-2) Ingredient 2: Salicylic Acid This is a chemical exfoliant (often called BHA). It’s capable of penetrating your pores and “cleaning them out”. Easy way put: less build up in your pores = less breakouts. If you have sensitive skin, get a cleanser. Works just as well and no irritation. (DOI: 10.1002/9781444317657.ch60) Ingredient 3: Benzoyl Peroxide This helps by fighting off cutibacterium acnes (c.acnes, formerly known as p.acnes), which is one of the other triggers for acne. This also comes in a cleanser, so if you’re more sensitive try that out. I recommend nothing higher than 5% as the higher you go, the more irritation arises. (DOI: 10.1111/jdv.15043) Of course, there are other ingredients that you may have heard improved acne as well… But, I’m sticking to the main 3 heavy hitters with the highest success rates and the most data available to support efficacy. Rubbing food that is “rich in vitamin A” is not the same as using a product with retinol in it. Main differences come down to vehicles/delivery systems. A product with retinol is designed to be applied topically, considerations of absorption and efficacy is (or should be) taken into consideration. When it comes to rubbing vitamin A rich foods on your skin, the entire concept is to eat it. Eating it has an effect on the levels in your body — ie too much vitamin A foods is not safe. This is also why the SCCS has recently determined humans were coming into unsafe levels of vitamin A because they took into consideration skincare, foods, etc and have decreased the retinol limit to 0.3% in leave on products in the EU. #naturalskincare #retinol #retinoid #antiaging #diyskincare #medicalaesthetician #aestheticsnurse
