How do you handle an internal job interview? An internal job interview is an interview at the company where you currently work for a lateral move or a promotion. Internal interviews could be really easy or extra hard. They are easier because you already know the company, you already know the projects, the lingo and you know the people that are interviewing you but that is also what can make it extra hard. The people interviewing you either like you or don’t like you or you don’t like them and that will change the dynamic. A few things that you have going for you as an internal candidate. Hiring managers almost always prefer internal candidates. We like people who we know or who are referred to us by people we know. As an internal candidate you are known, which is great for you. It’s hard for an external candidate to win over an internal one because you know the company, the lingo, the products, and you can offer insight only an insider can. As an internal candidate I would provide proof, receipts, and my performance review proving just how well you do your current job because that is what hiring mangers care about. Best predictor of future behavior is past behavior, show them how you have already succeeded, and you will convince them that you can handle this promotion. One big hurdle that might be going against you in an internal interview. You will most likely know the person interviewing you and they either like you or they don’t.
