Children’s choices matter. 🤍 Even when their choice isn’t possible. When a child chooses the princess dress for school, our first reaction might be: “No, you can’t wear that.” “Why would you choose that?” But remember… They chose something they love. So we don’t need to make them feel bad about their choice. “I know you really like that dress.” “And I know you wanted to wear it today.” Then we set the limit: “It’s not appropriate for school.” They might cry. They might get upset. And that’s okay. Changing the limit because of the reaction only teaches that the reaction changes the limit. Instead, give them autonomy inside the boundary: “You can wear this one or this one.” And if they can’t choose, you choose calmly. Many times, once children realize the limit is staying, they are ready to participate again. Because the goal isn’t control.
