KISORO, Uganda, November 12, 1972: Uganda's President, Field Marshal Idi Amin, attended a national Remembrance Day ceremony in the southwestern district of Kisoro on Sunday, paying tribute to thousands of Ugandans who served and died in the First and Second World Wars. The event, held at a memorial site in the remote border district of Kigezi, drew senior government officials, military officers, foreign diplomats, and representatives from several countries. Among those present was a representative of the British Government, reflecting the historical ties between Uganda and the Commonwealth war effort. President Amin laid a wreath at the monument and honoured the estimated 3,000 Ugandans who lost their lives in the two global conflicts. In an address to the gathering, he said the government would continue observing Remembrance Day as a tribute to those who had sacrificed their lives in what he described as the struggle for peace, liberty and freedom.
"Their service and sacrifice must not be forgotten," Amin told attendees, emphasizing the role played by African soldiers in campaigns far beyond the continent's borders. The ceremony also carried contemporary political significance. Amin used the occasion to reaffirm Uganda's commitment to a recently concluded peace agreement with neighbouring Tanzania following a period of border tensions and military clashes that had raised fears of a wider regional conflict. He pledged that Uganda would honour the terms of the agreement and work toward maintaining stability along the shared frontier. A wreath was also laid by the head of a Somali observer mission that had been monitoring conditions along the Uganda-Tanzania border. Somalia had played a role in regional efforts to ease tensions, while observers from several African states were involved in monitoring the implementation of the ceasefire arrangements. Kisoro's selection as the venue reflected its unique place in East African military history. Located near the borders of Rwanda and what was then Zaire, the area witnessed military operations during the East African Campaign of the First World War. Historical records indicate that fighting between British and German colonial forces continued in parts of the region even after the November 1918 Armistice in Europe because communications were slow and news of the ceasefire took time to reach remote battlefronts. Thousands of Ugandans served in the King's African Rifles and other colonial military units during both World Wars. They fought in campaigns across East Africa, North Africa, Burma, and other theatres of war, contributing significantly to Allied military operations. #historia #ugandatiktok #kenyantiktok🇰🇪 #africa #surualifupi
