Floral smocking tutorial - sharing a longer video where I show the floral smocking technique in more detail. Start by drawing a grid with 1x1 inch squares. I am using a 5x5 inch grid for this example. You can use an erasable pen for this or tailors chalk. Next, put a cross mark in every other square. These squares will be smocked into flowers. Smock the squares into flowers as shown in the video. Essentially you are putting a small stitch in each corner and then pull the fabric together to create a flower (this requires some wiggling and developing a feel of how to get the petals right). Follow for part 2 which I will post next week. This part will go into detail of how the finish the edges of the smocking I highly recommend to use a medium thick cotton or calico for your first try as it’s easiest to work with. However, I find that you can use most fabrics for floral smocking as long as it is not too thin to hold the flower petals.
