I first posted this a year ago today and I think it's important to still bring it to people's attention. Asquith Xavier has a plaque in Euston station, commemorating his role in breaking the unofficial race bar on employment practices across British rail as late as 1966. The plaque is very simple and almost hidden, but the story behind it is incredible, and recently in 2023 a new train was launched with his name on it. It's an incredible story of our recent history and he is rightfully here. It was also supported by the national union of railwaymen, although his own local branch protested against it, and raised it as an issue with the minister for railways, Barbara Castle. Mr Xavier was born in Dominica, and came to the United Kingdom as part of the windrush generation. RMT general secretary Mick Lynch described the train naming as an "important initiative" #davidharry #thelondonspy #xavierasquith #britishrail #racialprejudice #1960slondon #euston #railway #racism
