As a former TSA officer I can confirm that these random screenings do happen throughout the secure side of the terminal. Especially in larger airports.

This happened to me and hundreds of other people getting off a Royal Caribbean cruise. I was so irritated and freaking out they were about to make me miss my flight and I was thinking I’d done something wrong the whole time.
