"Kore kudasai" (this please)
This phrase is so universally helpful. Helps when buying/shopping for anything where the item you want is visible or you can point to it.

when I was in Japan last year I found myself using "dōzo" a lot to let people know they can go ahead of me in line or take my seat on a crowded train

I HIGHLY recommend learning the proper way to great people for the time of day. “ohayou”(morning), “konnichiwa”(day time) , “konbanwa”(evening). This will go along way in my option

Always pack/wear new socks. If wearing sandals, keep a pair of socks in your purse/bag. Many temples, castles, & attractions require you to take off your shoes.

kudasai - please. Kore - this or that. Great for pointing at the menu item you want to order.
Hai - yes. I said it a lot 😅 good for confirming that's what you want.
iiieee - No. pronounced more EEE-EHhhh. It can be a little rude/abrupt but they know you're trying to communicate they won't hold it against you.

Gouchososamadestu (butchered the spelling) goes A LONG way in my experience after a meal. Also “Mo Ippai Onegasimasu” when asking for another beer goes down a treat

Not really a new phrase but to build on the first one, "nigongo ga wakarimasen" is specifically "I don't understand Japanese"

osusume wa nan desu ka - what do you recommend? Good for restaurants, etc. You usually don't need more than "osusume..." for folk to get the idea.

Very helpful! I try to learn a little bit of the language when I go to a non-English speaking country but as a frequent traveler, it’s not always possible to become very proficient.

I've never been, but the one phrase I retained from duolingo was "do you speak english?" which is "eigo ga hanase masuka?" but you could also just ask in english and you'd get your answer 😅
