In the sentence πρὶν Ἀβραὰμ γενέσθαι ἐγὼ εἰμί the main verb is ειμι and is used as a present perfect. There isn't a full paradigm for the Greek to be verb. There is no aorist nor perfect for John to have chosen from to express a present perfect sense (I have been) so they pressed the present tense into service for that sense. We see this in a number of places in the NT text. See John 14:9 τοσούτῳ χρόνῳ μεθ’ ὑμῶν εἰμι καὶ οὐκ ἔγνωκάς με.
