Make it make sense.
1. Don't hand cash to cashier, use the tray.
2. Cashier doesn't use the tray and hands change directly to your hand.

i embarrassed myself so hard by trying to hand my cash to a cashier one time when the tray was in front of me but instead of taking it she lifted up the tray and made an “ahem” sound😭😭 i love japan but that was tough

Some places I tried to use tray but they take it before I get to the tray and some places don’t even have a tray just be polite it’s not hard

People saying 3 isnt true but pre-covid I went to Akiba and got an annoyed reply for not using the tray. I didnt see the tray and it made me feel bad. Now I use it religiously ^^;;
