Why is he famous? * He became king at about 13 years old after the death of his father, Amalric I. * As a child, he was diagnosed with leprosy (Hansen’s disease), a progressive illness that eventually left him blind and unable to walk. * Despite his illness, he proved to be a capable military and political leader. * He is especially known for resisting the expansion of the Muslim leader Saladin.
