@timesofcrimeuk: Graham Young—nicknamed the “Teacup Poisoner”—was a self‑taught toxicology obsessive from North‑West London who first spiked his family’s food with antimony at age 14. After nine years in Broadmoor Hospital for the criminally insane, he was released in 1970 and found work at John Hadland Ltd in Bovingdon, Hertfordshire. There he rekindled his fascination with lethal chemistry, slipping thallium into his co‑workers’ tea between May and November 1971. Two men, Bob Egle and Fred Biggs, died; eight others were hospitalised with a mystery “Bovingdon Bug” until pathologists at St Albans City Hospital detected thallium in their hair and nails. Police arrested Young on 21 November 1971. In his bedsit they discovered meticulous diaries tracking each dose and symptom, alongside bottles of thallium and antimony. At St Albans Crown Court in June 1972, expert toxicology evidence alone secured convictions for two counts of murder and two of attempted murder. The judge called Young “wicked beyond belief” and imposed a whole‑life tariff. He died in Parkhurst Prison in 1990—but his case still shapes UK laws on the release and monitoring of violent offenders. Educational true‑crime content. No graphic imagery.
