Hello! I went to FCHS 10-14. I was there in 2015 when LPA visited. It is beyond me why people in that community don’t see the pain that it causes. I don’t have any ‘merch’ left from HS because I can’t imagine displaying a slur in that way. There are a LOT of us that see you and wish the admin would change it. I’ve been out of there for over ten years but it still breaks my heart to see that they won’t let it go. 🫶

A town 30 miles from my hometown is the Estherville midgets. The town has voted multiple times to replace the name and the town always says no.

spirit lake is close to estherville and they have the mascot indians. the way i try to talk about how this impacts people from those groups. i’ve been scolded for trying to speak on behalf of this kind of thing.

I'm a transplant to Freeburg, I was beyond shocked to learn about the mascot. And if you talk to locals they are digging in their heels, they have shirts to campaign against changing it, people sad that their kids won't get to be midgets. If it changes I will be happy but truly shocked. People have been trying to get it changed for decades including Little People of America having protests and no changes. They do not care. They do not see it as a problem. It has something to do with a basketball team in the 30s I think. I don't know, it's kinda weird how much people are holding onto this. There are so many cooler names for a mascot. It's gross all of my kids school sports picture will always have this on them and on their uniforms. I don't understand and apologize for my community.

I just saw a truck with a Freeburg mascot sign on the back of it. It’s gross. All of these schools need to change their mascot. It’s wild that anyone thinks this is ok as a mascot.

McLaughlin SD changed their name and mascot from Midgets to Mustangs. I was President of the school board at the time and was harassed by community and “alumni”. I graduated from McLaughlin HS in 1990 with that mascot. In 2016, the school board agreed with the students that came to board and requested a change. It was not easy but the students didn’t give up. I hope that your situation works out for the best. I believe if students want the change they can get parent support too.
