my wife and i fostered 71 kids over twenty-six years. she passed in 2019 and i stopped taking placements, but i remember every single one of them. i'm seventy-four. my granddaughter set this up for me. i'm trying to find one boy. people always asked how we did it — how you let a kid go after a year, after three years, after you've taught them to ride a bike and sat up through the nightmares. you don't get used to it. you just decide a kid being loved for a little while is better than not at all. every kid who came through our house built a birdhouse with me on the workbench in the garage. their choice of color. their name carved in the bottom. i've still got the workbench. i don't have the birdhouses. they took those with them. that was the point. there was a boy we had for two years. came to us at seven, didn't speak for the first month. by the end he never stopped talking. he painted his birdhouse blue because he said it matched our front door and he wanted to remember which house was the safe one. he got placed back with family in another state in 2003 and we lost the thread, the way you do. blue house. blue birdhouse. i think about him more than is probably fair to the other seventy. don't read this sad. i had the best life a man could ask for and most of it walked through my front door scared and walked out a little less scared. i just want to know they made it. that's all an old foster dad wants. to know they made it. so if you were a foster kid in ohio between 1994 and 2019, and you remember a workbench and a birdhouse with your name carved in the bottom — that was our house. you were ours for however long we got you. and if you're the boy who painted his blue to match the safe house: it's still my front door color. come knock on it. twenty-six years. seventy-one kids. one workbench. i remember every one of you. #asim #fostercare #fosterdad #ifyouseethis #youwereours
