As someone who grew up in So Cal, I don’t think I’ve ever thought of LA as a “beach” city. I’ve always thought of it as a city that has beaches. Unlike San Diego or Santa Barbara.

It was also built away from the ocean cause the King had rules doing to to protect it from pirates. The Pueblo’s grid is also angled whereas the grid around it is straight north and south. If you look at a map you can see it. Those other cities were not built by the Spanish. Except SF, but that was a presidio not a Pueblo. Anyway, great post! 👏🏻

The founders of El Pueblo de LA were born in modern day Mexico and were of indigenous and mixed ethnic backgrounds. For all intents and purposes it was founded by Mexicans which doesn’t discount that fact it was the land of the tongva/ indigenous people of the area.
