Trump Hits Canada & Mexico With 25% Tariff #usa #america Trump just announced a 25% tariff on all goods including gasoline coming from Canada and Mexico. The two of them account for 30% of our imports, and 70% of our gasoline. Trump continues to repeat that foreign companies pay the tariffs, but economists say he is very wrong. Studies and history show that they are always passed on to the consumer. In fact, Walmart just warned that tariffs will raise their prices and that the tariffs are inflationary. The stock market as a whole seems to think Trump is bluffing still but auto stocks did take a bit of a tumble in response to the news. With Bernstein telling investors that the tariffs would spell disaster for the US auto industry but that they doubt Trump will follow through. Trump’s Tariffs are expected to cost each American at least $3,000 a year and that doesn’t account for higher gas prices. Trump says the tariffs will stay in place until Mexico and Canada stop “drugs, in particular fentanyl, and all illegal aliens” from entering the US. Which is famously such an easy problem to fix. Now Mexico says it might respond with retaliatory tariffs. With the Mexican President saying in a statement:

With the Mexican President saying in a statement: "Seventy percent of the illegal weapons seized from criminals in Mexico come from your country. We do not produce these weapons, nor do we consume synthetic drugs. Tragically, it is in our country that lives are lost to the violence resulting from meeting the drug demand in yours."
UK & France In Talks To Send Troops To Ukraine #usa #america The UK and France are reportedly in talks to send troops to Ukraine. This comes after Putin simulated a nuclear strike on the nation and North Korean troops are actively fighting on the front lines. An important factor in their decision making here, according to French media, is the election of Trump and perceived American disengagement. This weekend, the French minister was asked about sending French troops to Ukraine and he said “we do not discard any option”. Recently Poland described looking to form an alliance within Europe that many thought sounded an awful lot like a coalition of the willing. Estonia raised the issue last week, saying that they should be ready to send their military forces to secure a peace deal. A lot of European officials are looking at the situation and saying “we’ve been here before, we know what we have to do and we know what happens if we don’t”. Several American officials have even suggested that President Biden could return nuclear weapons to Ukraine that were taken from it after the fall of the Soviet Union. EU officials say that in order to truly replace what the US provides Europe in defense right now - it would only take 0.3% of the EU’s GDP. A very doable feat but they say it will be a difficult decision because they would have to buy more arms from the US In the near term. Something they would prefer not to do with a Trump presidency. The former President of Taiwan has urged the US to do whatever it can to help Ukraine, saying that Taiwan still has time. And that the most effective way to deter China is with a Ukrainian victory.
