It’s snowing at the bottom of the Dead Sea, snow made of salt. At Earth’s lowest exposed point, this hypersaline lake is actively building “salt giants,” vast underground deposits forming in real time as evaporation, density contrasts, and temperature gradients set the water column in motion. Unlike fossilized deposits elsewhere, the Dead Sea lets scientists watch these structures grow, crystal by crystal, today. For millennia, the lake’s status as a terminal basin has concentrated salts while the shoreline retreats, and in recent decades, reduced inflow from the Jordan River has accelerated a drop of roughly one meter per year. Once stably layered (meromictic), the Dead Sea shifted in the early 1980s to an annually overturning system (holomictic) as surface and deep salinities converged. That change primed the water for striking physics, and unexpected precipitation soon followed. In summer 2019, researchers documented “salt snow” falling through warm months, not just winter. The culprit is double diffusion: warm, extra-salty surface patches cool and sink while slightly cooler, less-salty deep water warms and rises. Where these layers meet, halite crystals nucleate and rain downward, a year-round process that intensifies in winter and sculpts deposits into giants, domes, and chimneys. This surprising discovery shows how even tiny shifts in temperature can reshape entire geological systems. Internal waves, currents, and seafloor springs add texture, governing where salt thickens and where it thins. Because formation is continuous, scientists can link fine-scale fluid mechanics to the evolving seafloor, insight rarely available in ancient systems. This living laboratory also reframes Earth’s past. During the Messinian Salinity Crisis, the Mediterranean’s connection to the Atlantic closed, evaporation surged, and immense salt layers accumulated, now buried beneath its deep basins. Watching the Dead Sea’s underwater snowfall offers a window into those events and practical lessons for today’s arid coasts, from shoreline stability to resource recovery, as water levels shift in a warming world.
