Basically the daughter and mother moved since the stepdaughter got expelled and they wanted a fresh start and ended up with a new neighbour and the daughter was terrorizing the other neighbours daughter (Sarah) so Sarah’s mom called Derek’s dad and asked for advice, he gave some and soon his stepdaughter assaulted Sarah at the park with a stick which ended up with Sarah needing stitches so they were planning on going to court soon, it also ended up that the mom was basically stalking Derek so they had a bit more evidence, they went to court and the stepdaughter got treatment and stuff and soon they were released early for good behaviour, she wrote a letter to the father while in jail saying she understood and didn’t expect a apology but she knows what she did was wrong, the father ignored it, soon later when she was released she moved halfway across the country with the stepdaughter and the mother got married with someone else, this is basically a summary with way less detail but Derek and the father are great and Derek has a lot of friends and is Normal again, he also joined the soccer team
