10 THINGS EVERY SCHOOL SHOULD DISCUSS IN THE FIRST STAFF MEETING OF A NEW TERM The first staff meeting of a new term should be more than welcoming teachers back to school. It is an opportunity for the school leadership and staff to understand what is expected, identify possible challenges and prepare properly for the term ahead. Here are 10 important areas every school should discuss. 1. GOALS AND EXPECTATIONS FOR THE NEW TERM The school should clearly communicate what it hopes to achieve during the term. This may include academic improvement, better punctuality, improved classroom management, stronger communication with parents or better staff collaboration. Example: If students performed poorly in Mathematics last term, the school may set a goal to improve students' understanding and performance through regular assessment and additional support. Experience: A school may begin a term with many good intentions, but if the goals are not clearly communicated, teachers may work in different directions. 2. TEACHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Every teacher should know their responsibilities before students resume. Discuss class responsibilities, duty schedules, clubs, assemblies, supervision, record keeping and any additional assignments. Example: If a teacher is responsible for morning duty on Mondays, this should be clearly communicated so the teacher knows when to arrive and what is expected. 3. SCHOOL RULES AND POLICIES Important school rules should be reviewed, especially where there have been problems in the previous term. This could include punctuality, attendance, dressing, use of phones, movement around the school and procedures for handling students. Example: If some teachers were frequently late last term, the school can remind staff about the expected resumption time and explain how punctuality will be monitored. 4. STUDENT BEHAVIOUR AND CLASSROOM MANAGEMENT Staff should discuss common behavioural issues that may affect learning. Teachers can share practical strategies for handling lateness, noise, fighting, disrespect, incomplete assignments and other concerns. Example: If several students struggled with excessive talking last term, teachers can agree on consistent classroom management approaches rather than each teacher handling the problem differently. 5. ACADEMIC EXPECTATIONS AND LESSON PREPARATION The meeting should address lesson planning, curriculum coverage, assessments, homework, marking and academic records. Teachers should understand what is expected from them and when important academic activities should be completed. Example: The school may require teachers to prepare lesson plans before teaching and submit continuous assessment records at specified times. 6. COMMUNICATION WITH PARENTS Schools should discuss how teachers are expected to communicate with parents. Staff should understand what information can be shared directly with parents and when a matter should be referred to the school head or administrator. Example: If a child repeatedly comes to school without completing assignments, the teacher should know whether to contact the parent directly or first report the matter to the head of school. 7. STAFF COLLABORATION Teachers should be encouraged to work together rather than operate as individuals. Discuss sharing teaching ideas, supporting new teachers, communicating important information and helping one another when necessary. Example: A teacher who has successfully taught a difficult topic can share the method or teaching aid used with other teachers. 8. SCHOOL EVENTS AND IMPORTANT DATES The first meeting is a good time to discuss important activities for the term. These may include examinations, open days, excursions, inter-house sports, celebrations, meetings, projects and other school programmes. Example: If Open Day is scheduled for a particular Friday, teachers should know early so they can prepare students' academic records and other information needed for parents. #schoolmeeting #staffmeeting #SchoolLeadership #schoolleaders
