The Kurds are an Iranian people native to the mountainous region of Western Asia known as Kurdistan, with ancestral roots tied by many historians and cultural traditions to ancient Near Eastern groups like the Guti and Lullubi. Over the millennia, Kurdish history has been marked by a fluctuating balance between tribal independence and the rise of powerful, sovereign states. Traditional narratives often trace their early political legacy back to the ancient Median Kingdom, which helped overthrow the Assyrian Empire in the 7th century BCE. During the Islamic Golden Age and medieval periods, Kurdish dynasties flourished across the region, most notably the Marwanids in Upper Mesopotamia and the global superpower of the Ayyubid Empire, founded by Saladin, which united Egypt, Syria, and parts of the Hijaz in the 12th and 13th centuries. In the 18th century, the Zand Dynasty, founded by Karim Khan Zand, rose to rule a vast portion of Persia (modern-day Iran), establishing a period of peace and cultural renaissance.
