A California community is mourning the loss of 37 year old Vanessa Sanchez, who survived Stage 4 breast cancer only to be found dead inside a suitcase in her Berkeley apartment. Sanchez was last seen on May 24 entering her apartment with 28 year old Damarcus David Jones. After her family became concerned when they could no longer reach her, her body was discovered on May 30 inside a black roller suitcase, prompting a homicide investigation. Investigators allege Jones killed Sanchez, placed her body in bags and then inside the suitcase, and remained in the apartment for several days before leaving. Court documents say he later admitted to opening the windows and running an air purifier because he knew her body would begin to decompose. Sanchez, an admissions administrator who had recently overcome Stage 4 breast cancer, is being remembered by loved ones as a compassionate woman whose strength and resilience inspired everyone around her.
