What does thermal paste do? Does it activate the cpu or just make sure the plastic sticks to it?

I never use patterns I spread it evenly with a thin piece of plastic in a thin layer. Been building PCs for 40 years and there are few things more ridiculous I’ve seen than people discussing what patterns to put the thermal grease in. It only needs a thin layer to help with the contact so just spread it out to cover the top of the CPU instead of hoping your magic glop pattern will cover everything.

Too much paste will degrade heat transfer. Please refer to the CPU user manual for best application method and measure carefully.

I mean spreading paste in circle is actually enough because you only need to cool down the procesor inside, you don’t really need to cool all of IHS
