Here's why the Rubik's cube matters: by having the patient perform a real-time cognitive and motor task while surgeons operate, the medical team can directly monitor brain function as they work. If removing tissue near the tumor started to affect the patient's coordination, memory, or fine motor control, they'd see it immediately through changes in how the patient is solving the cube, giving surgeons a live signal to adjust their approach and avoid damaging critical brain tissue.
