According to King’s College Hospital in London, Denise Bacon, a 65-year-old retired speech and language therapist from England, had been experiencing slowness of movement and muscle stiffness from Parkinson’s disease, which was affecting her ability to walk, swim and play her beloved clarinet. During this four-hour operation at King’s College Hospital in July, Keyoumars Ashkan MBE, a professor of neurosurgery, performed deep brain stimulation (DBS) – a surgical procedure used on selected patients with treatment-resistant movement disorders such as Parkinson’s disease – to implant electrodes in Bacon’s brain.
