Before you ask another question, pause. Instead of filling the silence or throwing another question at them, get curious about what’s happening in the room. Try: • “I’ve noticed I’ve been asking a lot of questions today, and I’m wondering what it’s like for you to be here with me right now.” •“I’m curious if this feels different from how you usually communicate with people.” •“I’m noticing it feels hard to get much from you today. What are you noticing?” • “Part of me wonders if you’re waiting for me to lead this conversation.” •“What makes it hard to know what to say right now?” • ”If you didn’t have to give me the ‘right’ answer, what might you say?” • “What are you noticing as I ask you these questions?” Sometimes one-word answers can be protection, uncertainty, difficulty accessing emotions, fear of judgment, people-pleasing, disengagement, or simply not knowing what therapy is supposed to look like. I’d ask myself: Is this how my client interacts in other areas of their life, or is this something that is happening specifically in our therapeutic relationship? And sometimes your urge to keep asking questions is information, too. Get curious about this^ 😅 Notice what is happening between you and the client. Slow down enough to explore it. If you’re struggling to get deeper with clients, check the link of my bio for my DEEPER framework.
