Keilette told her daddy that she cried at school because a teacher scolded her. The next morning, she was scared and upset and didn’t want to go back. Daddy tried to find out more, but she just looked down and went along with getting ready for school. Daddy found it quite weird she was scared to go to school and told her to go tell me what happened. When she first talked to me, I noticed she was gauging my reaction, so I spoke to her again in a reassuring tone, letting her know I was there for her. She then bravely shared what happened. She doesn’t speak much Chinese and I was really impressed by how clearly she recounted everything. I want all my kids to know that no matter what happens, we’ve got their backs. Kids may sometimes think they’re at fault and deserve to be “punished” or accept “nasty remarks. And in cases where they face mistreatment, like in that recent incident with the cook, they might not even realise they’re being treated unfairly. Often, they feel like it’s their fault and keep it to themselves out of shame. We are not helicopter parents who hover like our kids cannot be said. Many times, it may be a causal remark or threat, but to the kids, they perceive differently. And we also do not want our kids to think that, to get something, they have to resort to threats or intimidation. I think making sure our kids feel comfy telling us everything, from the little things to the big stuff, is important, no matter how young. It’s never too early for this. When kids feel safe, they know they have a reliable support system. This helps us as parents stay informed about what’s going on in their lives, and figure out if anything needs addressing or if they need a little guidance. It also helps us catch any unusual behaviour/treatment early so we can step in when needed, keeping them safe from inappropriate situations or their own feelings.
