One thing I’ve learned over the years is that repotting doesn’t always mean starting over. A lot of people assume you should remove all of the old potting mix and completely loosen the roots every time you move a plant into a larger pot. But if the root system is healthy, I usually do the opposite. Those roots have already established an environment they’re growing well in. Instead of tearing everything apart, my goal is to preserve as much of that healthy root ball as possible while simply giving the plant more room to continue growing. Most of the time, I’ll only loosen a few roots at the very bottom if they’re beginning to circle the pot. Then I’ll backfill with fresh potting mix, water everything in, and let the plant keep doing what it was already doing successfully. Of course, if I’m dealing with root rot, severely compacted soil, or another root problem, that’s a completely different situation. But when the roots are healthy, I believe less is often more.
