I think one of the most disorienting experiences is realizing that somebody you trusted isn’t just capable of hurting you—they’re capable of completely rewriting what happened afterward. Because betrayal itself is painful enough. You can eventually process, You did something wrong, it hurt me, and now I have to decide what I’m going to do about it. But manipulation adds another layer where suddenly you’re defending your own memory of events. You confront them about something they did, and somehow twenty minutes later the conversation is about your reaction, your tone, the fact that you looked through something, the mistake you made six months ago, or how difficult you’ve made their life. 😭 And now you’re leaving the conversation wondering how you somehow became the person apologizing. That’s what makes chronic dishonesty so destructive. It doesn’t only damage trust in the other person; over time, it can make you question your own judgment. But I also think we have to be careful with labels like “toxic manipulator” because sometimes two hurt people genuinely remember a situation differently, and somebody feeling victimized doesn’t automatically mean they’re deliberately “playing the victim.” People can become defensive, minimize their behavior, or struggle to take accountability without being some calculated mastermind. The real concern is the repeated pattern. Do they lie when the truth would make them look bad? Do they change details when confronted? Do they consistently make themselves innocent in every story? Can they ever say, “I did that. It was wrong. You didn’t deserve it. I’m sorry,” without immediately attaching a but? Because accountability requires being willing to remain the person who was wrong in a particular moment without desperately finding a way to transfer that discomfort onto somebody else. And gender doesn’t really change that. A man behaving this way can be equally destructive. You don’t need a partner who has never made a serious mistake; you need somebody whose relationship with the truth is stronger than their need to protect their image. Because a painful truth can at least be dealt with. A relationship where reality itself changes depending on who needs to avoid accountability becomes almost impossible to repair.
