@the_spiritual_ot: Anyone else reeling after the recent announcement from Minister Mark Butler? He said children with ‘mild to moderate autism’ or developmental delay will be diverted from the NDIS to a new program called the Thriving Kids Program from mid 2027. The problem (well one of many) is they’re denying access now! In 2025, with no other foundation supports or programs developed yet. This is leaving families drowning with no where to turn! Mainstream supports often have large out of pocket costs that many families cannot afford with the cost of living right now! Our children deserve better!! If you have the spoons, write to your local MPs and Mr Butler and let them know how you feel about this! #disabilityrights #ndis #actuallyautistic #disability #humanrights #supports #mainstream #parenting #advocacy #exhausted #real #viral #fyp #occupationaltherapist #frontline #familycentredpractice #neurodivergentaffirming
Mild and moderate autistic individuals can still get jobs, have an education and live a similar life as a neurotypical. NDIS is meant to fund and support people that need significant support, not just ear defenders and some fidgets. There's no reason that mild and moderate autistic individuals need funding just because they have a permanent diagnosis; it's based on what is actually needed to support the individual.

The proposed changes to the NDIS are discriminatory. They target one particular disability: autism. They will disadvantage children and families. Allied health services would shift back to Medicare, meaning there will be one-size-fits-all lifetime caps on services regardless of need. Our most vulnerable will simply not be able to afford the gap fees and will go without essential support and services.
Make no mistake, this will cost lives. It already has.
The autistic community is being thrown under the bus yet again by politicians without qualifications or lived experience in disability and who are more than happy to play games and try to score points at any cost, even though that cost will be (and already has been) Disabled lives. Dispicable.

The fact that the minister doesn’t know autism is a permanent disability blew my mind.

they already did pick and choose anyway. my son was rejected when he had diagnosis of encopresis, ADHD combined, ODD, Severe DLD and Severe Dyslexia. only was accepted after he got ASD diagnosis and they wouldn't listen the others as secondary.

I was horrified by the announcement. especially the use of "mild autism" in the press release nauseated me. I'm rural and we already have support issues. the framework this announcement needs isn't even possible where we are. more kids are going to get left behind.

NDIS has always picked and choose disabilities, ironically a lot of physical autism comorbities like connective tissue disorders like EDS and digestive issues like chrons are ignored, even though bc autism is how the brain is STRUCTURED, because it’s a brain thing it usually effects the body

I think we need to revolt. Autistic mum of a level 2/3 autistic Bub who has made amazing progress with ot, psychology and supportive school only one of which I could afford as a single mother. I can’t support him because we struggle with the same things.

I have 2 kids I been battling them for 3 years for my youngest to get the correct supports. I’m in the middle of a battle through tribunal with them and of and when it finally ends my battle isn’t over cause my poor other child took 2 years to be seen and now they are leaving him in the dust as well for supports. And I’m drowning trying to advocate for my 2 kids while having health issues myself that the ndis doesn’t even care about

blame the states. NDIS was meant for those with severe disabilities with high support needs. states washed their hands of any disability supports and so everyone got lumped into the NDIS. was never the intention for NDIS to cover everyone. speak to your state reps

And this likely won't be transferred to school. As a teacher it is crazy how much schools and parents have to go through to get a dribble of funding

It’s absolutely appalling the “supports” level 2 autistics get. Just because the most of us aren’t unable to communicate it doesn’t mean it’s any less of a disability that requires substantial support

ASD needs separate specislised support. 1:35 kids have ASD. Continual progressive support on a holistic level is needed. NDIS is not a good fit! Support was there before NDIS. Put that back in place. Rorting by parents and providers caused this. NDIS initially put set $ amounts in plans for each asd level. You think that was better?……. No

Also, did you know that in WA the department of communities who do the free autism assessment are blanketing most children with ADHD labels and when they go for a reassessment with someone else (that costs an excessive amount) they’re instantly picked up as level 2 or level 3 autistic and scratch their head at the previous diagnosis… that’s what happened to us! When I brought it up at our behavioural analysis appointment we discovered there has been a flood of kids who have been misdiagnosed by the government body who’s supposed to assess
