@tafepsingapore: Do you think these scenarios imply Workplace Discrimination? Workplace Discrimination can come in many different forms, even if it’s not explicit. If you are facing any form of Workplace Discrimination, you may contact https://www.tal.sg/tafep/contact-us for assistance. #TSLOnTheStreets #streetinterview #workplacediscrimination #workplaceproblems #workplacefairness
Professional language in Singapore is officially English, why every other job need Chinese speaking?

All the scenarios are not okay but when asking for Chinese speaking, it's okay? What is TAFEP trying to say?

we all know chinese speaking preferred really means chinese person preferred. I know non-chinese chinese speakers who don’t get offered an interview after applying

chinese speaking yes when u are expected to interact with a Chinese speaking client for example like a translator then Chinese language is seen as specified skillset but when Chinese speaking preference is so that u can speak with the boss or colleague is that not discrimination?

I went for an interview recently with a GOVT agency and after the final round the hirer ask me if I have kids and if my kids require a lot of attention and what kind of support I have at home. I didn’t get the job but found out they hired someone who is single .

Chinese speaking preferred is definitely ok when you have to deal with clients or colleagues. I work in branch office where the headquarters are located in Taiwan. While my colleagues from Taiwan can speak English, there is an increase in efficiency when you can speak Chinese for better communication. It’s not a must, but preferred.

i've only encountered very few jobs that genuinely require you to talk in mandarin to china chinese almost everyday. but still so many jobs put it there anyway LOL.

It’s okay to ask if planning to have kids. Cause if you plan to have kids you will have more responsibilities to your kid therefore will affect the company. Eg: AL , request for flexible schedule , maternity/paternity leave WFH etc. Remember this, you care for your family, business man care for the company. Different role…

They list out their criteria - discrimination. Dont list out when the wrong candidate came for interviews wasting their time.

Either you need Chinese speaking folks or not, there isn’t the in between ‘preferred’ for the role

if a jd asks for Chinese speaker for a generic role, why put it all the way at the bottom and wasting job seekers time? put it at the first point or better, write the whole JD in mandarin.

maybe you can ask the Chinese people you interviewed if it is ok if the job requires only people who can speak Malay to avoid confirmatory bias

What’s the use if the advertisement is not discriminatory but internally they want something else?? I don’t want to waste my time writing in if I am not fit for the position.
