“What if my kid doesn’t go to college?” is the best argument FOR a 529, not against it. Everyone treats that question like a dealbreaker. It’s actually the reason to open one. What a 529 covers now: • Up to $20k a year for K-12 tuition, plus tutoring, textbooks, AP and SAT fees • Trade school, community college, apprenticeships • Occupational licenses. FAA pilot certificates, CNA, cosmetology, welding, HVAC • Up to $10k toward student loans • A different kid entirely. Switch the beneficiary to a sibling, a cousin, a future grandkid, or yourself • Up to $35k into your kid’s Roth IRA if they never use it for school That last one is the kicker. No income limits, which is the whole reason high earners can’t fund a Roth normally. But the account has to be open 15 years before you can do it. So the cost of waiting is real. Every year you sit on this is a year that option moves further away. And worst case? You pull the money out and pay income tax plus a 10% penalty on the growth only. Your contributions come back to you untouched. That’s the actual floor everyone’s scared of. Save this for the next time someone tells you 529s are a trap. Not tax advice. State rules vary and a few states, California included, tax the Roth rollover anyway. #529plan #collegesavings #PersonalFinance #moneytips #financialplanning
