If you have a highly capable mind aka high IQ, high processing speed, extremely analytical etc and that mind has taken you far, one of the hardest things to learn is that thinking harder is not always the answer. In an OCD rumination loop, anxiety creates uncertainty, uncertainty creates fear, and fear disguises itself as control: if I just think about this a little longer, analyze every angle, figure it out completely, then I’ll finally feel safe. You might even get a moment of relief which teaches your brain to do it again. One practice that has helped me is tabling it. I close my eyes and visualize a container. I put the thoughts, questions, and emotions inside of it, lock it, and give the entire container to Jesus and not because I’ve resolved it but bc I’m practicing not needing to. The work is learning to sit in the discomfort of uncertainty without reaching for control through more thinking. Sometimes the most powerful thing a powerful mind can learn is: I do not have to solve this right now…i can tolerate not knowing, i can surrender what I cannot control. #ocd #rumination #cptsd #anxiety #ocdrumination
