Defensiveness is deflecting accountability and without accountability ina relationship it doesn’t work.

I think your videos would get a lot more traction. If you’re more mindful of the background noises you tap a lot and you’re moving your cut back-and-forth and it’s just super distracting.

How does one handle the defensiveness that arises because their partner was raised from childhood in an extremely controlling and legalistic cult where every perceived infraction was called on the carpet and basically prosecuted nearly every day? An upbringing in which they were forced to defend themselves over and over for years? I hate the existing defensiveness and the cult, but I love the person who survived.

Are there clinicians or researchers that you recommend looking into other than Gottman?

Does Gottman argue that the “Four Horsemen” cause divorce? Or are they correlated with or present in marriages that end with divorce?

are you saying it’s very serious or that it should be treated with parallel methods (e.g. talking to the family vs the person)?

Getting off of being defensive took hard work. My big thing was making plausible excuses for the person that hurt me or the person who was sharing. Ugh! It's an artform~ validating and empathizing takes practice! 💕🦋💯 For myself and others. My husband and I are so good at it now!!

I believe the defensiveness stems from codependency. Codependency no more by Melody Beattie is such a good for family's who are affected by addiction!!

Love this mini series. Meet people where they’re at and like their problem are REAL for them! This thinking would be helpful in uniting the people of the left and right political ideologies. Essentially humanizing each other!

This definitely describes my relationship, but I’m really committing to making it work. I understand that I can’t change my partner, but what are some ways that I can practically react to defensiveness and criticism from him

If a person is ND and is completely unaware they are being defensive because they are in fight or flight how do we “fix” that? I’m 20 yrs into a marriage and I still do it. The time from fight to apology has significantly decreased but how can I prevent getting defensive?? I’ve been in therapy for many years.

It’s me. I’m the defensive one in my relationship. I’m aware of it. I’m working on it. But how do I stop?! 😢 It’s killing my husband
