A 2.5 year old does not yet understand empathy in the mature sense of deliberately taking another person’s perspective, regulating their own impulse, and choosing a response based on what someone else may be feeling. Yeh, that's a mouthful, right? Because its a complex capacity. They may show early concern or react to another child’s distress, but the capacities required for consistent empathic behaviour are still developing. The first skill we can strengthen is emotional awareness, helping them notice that other people have feelings and that those feelings can be read through facial expressions, tone of voice, body language, and behaviour. We do not build this awareness simply by telling a child to be kind and share. We build it by repeatedly drawing their attention to what is happening and asking open ended questions. These questions train observation before they demand understanding or action. Over time, as language, impulse control, emotional regulation, and perspective-taking develop, that growing awareness gives the child the foundation they need to respond with greater empathy.
