Difference Between SWL and WLL ????👇👇 What is SWL (Safe Working Load)? SWL (Safe Working Load) is the maximum load that lifting equipment can safely lift under normal working conditions without creating an unacceptable risk. In the past, SWL was widely used for lifting equipment such as: * Wire rope slings * Chain slings * Shackles * Hooks * Cranes * Lifting beams However, SWL is now considered an outdated term in many international standards because it can be interpreted differently. ⸻ What is WLL (Working Load Limit)? WLL (Working Load Limit) is the maximum load that a lifting device or lifting accessory is designed and rated to lift safely during normal operation. WLL is the official and internationally accepted term used by manufacturers and standards such as ASME, EN, ISO, and OSHA. The WLL is determined by the manufacturer after: * Engineering design * Material strength calculations * Testing * Applying the required Design Factor (Safety Factor) Example: * A shackle marked WLL 6.5 t means the maximum safe working load is 6.5 tonnes. * It must never be overloaded. ⸻ Main Difference Between SWL and WLL SWL WLL Safe Working Load Working Load Limit Older term Modern international term Less commonly used today Officially used by manufacturers May vary depending on older regulations Clearly defined by engineering standards Gradually being replaced Preferred worldwide ⸻ Where is SWL Used? You may still find SWL marked on: * Older cranes * Older lifting equipment * Older lifting beams * Some old offshore equipment * Older rigging accessories ⸻ Where is WLL Used? Today, WLL is commonly marked on almost all modern lifting equipment, including: * Web slings * Round slings * Chain slings * Wire rope slings * Shackles * Hooks * Eyebolts * Lifting clamps * Spreader beams * Lifting beams * Hoists * Modern cranes * Lifting accessories ⸻ Example A web sling has the following marking: WLL = 5 tonnes This means: * Maximum lifting capacity = 5 tonnes * Do not lift 5.1 tonnes or more. * Always consider the sling angle, hitch type, and inspection condition before lifting. ⸻ Important Note Many people think SWL and WLL are different capacities, but in practice they usually indicate the same maximum safe lifting capacity. The main difference is terminology: * SWL = Older term. * WLL = Modern and internationally accepted term. For this reason, most manufacturers now mark WLL instead of SWL. ⸻ Key Points to Remember * SWL = Safe Working Load (Older term) * WLL = Working Load Limit (Current international term) * WLL is the preferred term in modern lifting and rigging operations. * Never exceed the WLL of any lifting equipment. * Always inspect lifting gear before use and follow the manufacturer’s instructions. * The actual load on slings can increase due to sling angle, hitch configuration, and dynamic loading, even if the object’s weight remains the same. Simple Rule: If you see WLL on lifting equipment, treat it as the maximum safe load that must never be exceeded. #NIAZI #MR_NIAZI_LIFTING #Crane #CraneOperator #MobileCrane
