A 15-year-old Ghanaian boy, Javits Frimpong, has tragically lost his life after being shot while walking to school in the Bronx, New York. Javits had moved from Ghana to the United States just ONE YEAR ago to reunite with his father, Thomas Frimpong, and pursue a better future. According to his father, Javits had repeatedly complained about being bullied at school. His father revealed that two students had been suspended following an altercation involving his son, and that Javits had previously reported being harassed by another student. Police are investigating his killing, and a connection between the alleged bullying and the shooting has not yet been established. My heart genuinely breaks for this young boy and his family. But this tragedy also brings me back to an issue I’ve spoken about repeatedly: AFROPHOBIA. For far too long, we’ve witnessed sections of the Black community normalising hostility towards African immigrants, particularly online. Africans are subjected to racialised insults, dehumanisation, mockery and, in some instances, disturbing rhetoric suggesting that we should be harmed or killed. Some of this hostility is promoted and encouraged by people with sizeable platforms and influence. We need to understand that dehumanising people, normalising hatred and encouraging hostility have consequences. We cannot keep pretending that these attitudes exist in a vacuum. To be clear, we do not yet know the motive behind Javits’ killing. But we absolutely should be able to discuss the wider problem of Afrophobia and anti-African hostility without dismissing it. Black people around the world can acknowledge our different histories, ethnicities, cultures and identities while still treating one another with dignity and respect. We don’t have to be identical to respect one another. Rest in peace, Javits Frimpong. My condolences to Thomas Frimpong and the entire family. 🕊️🖤 #africantiktok #BlackTikTok #afrophobia #JavitsFrimpong #protectchildren
