Hi mama, just wanted to share some info that I was told in my NICU for my preemies. Gentle petting/strocking can overstimulate little preemies even into higher gestational weeks if they are still unstable. Not saying that’s the case for your little one, hope she starts handling the oxygen weans better soon🫶🏻

Don’t forget that it’s not just her O2 saturations your team looks at! It’s also her work of breathing, xrays, gas etc. hang in there!

As a nicu nurse, our goal isn’t to keep your baby “trapped” or increase her respiratory support on purpose! I have to remind parents that we are on the same team. As another comment mentioned we are looking at signs, even subtle ones that most people don’t even realize are respiratory distress. Increased WOB, retractions, head bobbing, blood gases, amount/severity of desats, brady’s, etc. A lot more goes into it than just readings I promise. We don’t make the rules, we follow the babies!

Hey mama as a Respiratory therapist the pulse ox has a waveform and if that wave form is accurate it can be trusted but if its wonky thats when we will move it around. We also look at her work of breathing, blood gases, ect to evaluate her

I had a 34 week and she just turned a month yesterday and she is healthy however she stops breathing. She is still in there and I’m right there with you. It’s so frustrating and so sad 😭

hang in there, it just takes time. She’s so tiny still. My son wasn’t extubated until he was 35 weeks and he was on c pap for a day before moving to high flow/vapotherm! they do everything in their own time ❤

I know it can feel for forever my 27 weeker felt like they were on c pap for forever but then high flow/ cannula went super quick and then he was able to come home on no oxygen!! I know it’s so hard and sometimes feels like there is no light at the end of the tunnel but there is 💚

Good luck momma! Stay strong. You got this! She’ll go home. Our son also took his time and was on and off of the cpap and 02. He is 2 today and doing amazing! Didn’t even go home with 02.

The same exact thing happened to my baby - they transitioned my daughter from cpap to high flow and had to go back to cpap 2 days later - left her on the cpap for about a week and then tried to high flow again and she’s been on high flow ever since - she recently got moved down from 5 to 4 units on the high flow. We still have a ways to go before we can do bottle feeding but I understand every single emotion you are going through. It’s tough, but our little babies are fighters!

I know it feels like one step forward and 10 steps back some days. But you are in the home stretch even when it doesn’t feel like that!! ❤ You want her to be ready and these backpedals are signs that she’s just not ready! Also nurses know when the desats are baby or equipment so you don’t need to worry about that! Praying she turns that final corner soon! 🙏

also they are desats. we know how to read the wave to know if its a real one or the probe not working. that’s how she knew to come in and fix it. nobody’s charting alarms from a machine malfunction i promise
