This squall was coming for us and this shelf cloud will forever be in our nightmares. 🫣 When we felt the sudden rush of cool air from the storm’s downdraft hit our faces, we knew there was no turning back or outrunning it. We saw this beast on our radar and as it quickly approached, we dropped all sails, reviewed all our options, but there was no escaping it. We were coming off the coast of Georgia and about 7 miles away from the inlet. Trying to avoid it meant turning around into on coming seas and backtrack into the Atlantic. Knowing that these type of squalls can bring sudden wind shifts of 30-50+ knots and TONS of rain, we closed all hatches, told the kids to hunker down, and prepared for war. Haha! The wind did a complete 180 degree turn and we saw a rapid increase to 33kts with a sheet of rain. Then came the lightning and because of the wind shift, the sea state built and became gnarly. Solution: Try to stay calm and say your prayers that the lightning stays away. Brandon put both engines hard forward and plowed ahead straight into it, hoping as it moved east and we moved west, it wouldn’t last long and we’d get a free fresh water boat wash out of it—boat wash accomplished. And our prayers worked…because somehow the lightning paused until we passed through but then went bat-poop-crazy after it passed us! 🙏🏼 #ocean #storms #boatlife #sailing #sailboat #sailingfamily
