idk when it changed....but these days I get the RUDEST responses when I ask if I should bring things to a gathering. I've gotten into actual fights with people for bringing a 'host gift'. I've been told it's inappropriate to assume that the host "won't have everything they need" and that bringing extras along implies that you either don't like what they're offering or think they can't offer enough. 🤷🏻♀️🤷🏻♀️honestly, I still offer, but it's always met with saltiness and attitude.

ever since i got older i always feel SO BAD showing up empty handed. i wasn't able to get my niece's actual gifts so i brought a gallon of sweet tea instead & they had just accidentally poured out half their tea onto the floor before i got there. don't show up empty handed!!!! you never know how helpful it could be!!!

The money for gas thing is real cause I drive people to the airport SO MUCH and I’ve not once been offered gas money. Not once. And like if I ask for it suddenly I feel like a jackass for begging for money, like I don’t NEED money to be there for my friends but the lack of reciprocal care back kind of stings

Righttt, I paid $30 so we could bowl for another half hour. They started talking abt ordering a triple dipper at the cafe in there (15-20$ btw). When I said that I wouldn’t be spending any more money except for whatever else I had planned on that night, (implying that if they wanted to get the appetizer to share together, they would have to buy it lol not split it with me) suddenly nobody wanted to order, and her bf wants to say “I mean do you want money or smth” like no i don’t need you to offer money but just like I wanted to bowl for more time, so I paid for the extra time, it’s exactly the same for yall .

I’m so glad I’m that friend! Also I’ve raised my 19 year old to be the same! It’s usually the parents who aren’t teaching gratitude or generosity. It needs to be specifically taught, or at the very least, SHOWN as an example by the parents.
